There is a local tale about a girl who once stood on the side of this pond, clutching a mirror that she had kept as a reminder of her dead mother. Looking at the surface of the water she thought she saw her mother's figure. However, not realizing that it was her own reflection, she dived into the pond screaming for her mother. This story is the origin of the pond's name "Kagami-no-ike" (lit. the mirror pond).
