Untoan Temple
Minami Uonuma City
Zen temple at the foot of Mt. Kinjo
In 1429, the Shogun's Deputy for Kanto, Uesugi Norizane, restored the Zen Temple. There is a stone pathway from the red gate to the main temple, which has the Lotus Sutra written on it, and on each stone there is one Chinese character from the sutra; it was believed that if one stepped firmly on these stones they would come into money, and from this belief the phrase, "Did you step on the soil of Untoan?" was born.
