Accidentally discovered when prospecting for natural gas
In 1957, while in the middle of prospecting for natural gas an abundant hot spring unexpectedly started gushing out water and from that time on the area has been widely known as a hot spring resort; in 1964, it was designated as a national hot spring health resort. There are two hot spring resorts, the Sakato Hot Spring Resort that is located along the Uono River and the Nishiyama Hot Spring Resort that is located at the foot of the east side of Mount Hakkatouge.
